This project is a reinterpretation of Banksy’s iconic Girl With the Balloon (2002), an artwork known for its emotional resonance and layered symbolism. Fascinated by street art’s power to communicate social messages, I explored how visual languages can spark cultural dialogue.
I adapted the original piece to address the rise in anti-Asian hate during the COVID-19 pandemic, replacing the heart-shaped balloon with a red Asian lantern and adding the phrase Stop Asian Hate in bold red letters.
The lantern, a universal symbol of Asian culture representing prosperity and hope, continues the theme of resilience, love, and freedom. The color red, deeply rooted in Asian traditions, symbolizes good fortune, celebration, and protection against adversity.
Through this adaptation, I aimed to both honor Banksy’s legacy and bring attention to an urgent social issue, using visual storytelling as a tool for activism.
